There have been many studies that show a significant decrease in stress and anxiety after floatation. While floating, one experiences an activation of the parasympathetic nervous system and a suppression of the sympathetic nervous system (the “fight or flight” stress response). This results in a decrease of hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine, and an increase in endorphins and dopamine – aka, the natural pain killers our bodies were perfectly designed to produce.
